Questions Words

Why? Farvos פֿאַר וואָס
Where? Vu וווּ
What? Vos וואָס
Who? Ver ווער
When? Vifil ווען


Why are they tired? Farvos zenen zey mid? פארוואס זענען זיי מיד
Why are you busy? Farvos bistu farnemen? פארוואס זענען איר פאַרנומען
Where does your family live? Vu voynt dayn mishpokhe? ווו וווינט דיין משפּחה
Where are the shoes? Vu zenen di shikh? ווו זענען די שיך
What do you like? Vos hostu lib? וואָס האָסטו ליב
What are you doing? Vos tustu? וואָס טוסטו
Who is the girl? Ver iz di madel? ווער איז די מיידל
Who are you? Ver bistu? ווער ביסטו
When does he comes? Ven kumt er? ווען קומט ער
When is he happy? Ven iz er gliklekh? ווען איז ער גליקלעך

Yes or No Questions

In Yiddish, the word "Tsi" is a method to ask someone a yes or no questions. Its the same as when you add "do" in English.
Do you have a house? Tsi hostu a hoyz? צי האט ער א הויז
Do they speak Yiddish? Tsi redn zey yiddish? צי רעדן זיי ייִדיש
Does he eat an apple? Tsi est er an epl? צי עסט ער אַן עפּל
Does the Rabbi read the book? Tsi leyent der rebe a bukh? צי לייענט רבי אַ בוך
Another way is to just put the verb first. Same rule as in english
Are David and Rachel here? Zenen Dovid un Rakhl da? זענען דוד און רחל דאָ
Is he a student? Iz er a talmid? איז ער אַ תּלמיד?
Are you a Jew? Bistu a Yid?

ביסטו אַ איד

Is Hannah happy? Iz khane gliklekh? איז חנה גליקלעך
